DIGITAL EMPOWERMENT OF WOMEN – A GLOBAL TREND
On 30 September this year, the Director of the E-Governance Agency, Olga Tumuruc, attended the 21st edition of the Plenipotentiary Conference of the International Telecommunication Union (ITU), an event of major importance for the information and communication technology (ICT) sector worldwide. The conference takes place between 26 September and 14 October 2022, in Bucharest, Romania, at the Parliament Palace and is the most important decision-making forum of the ITU, in which overall policy lines of the organization are established, strategic and financial plans for the next 4 years are adopted, and the members of the Union’s administration, of the ITU Board and of the Committee for Radio Regulation are elected.
Together with other female representatives of the member states' administrations, regional telecommunications organizations, intergovernmental organisations and specialised agencies, Olga Tumuruc participated in the panel "Strengthening Women's Capacities and Leadership in ITU". In her speech, the EGA Director mentioned: "The ICT sector in the Republic of Moldova is dynamic, friendly and constantly developing. This is certainly one of the factors contributing to the active involvement of women, including in leadership roles in major ICT industries".
Olga Tumuruc also mentioned that, in the past 5 years of activity, a number of women were employed in the EGA team, which now represent over 50% of the total number of employees, and this is valid not only to the IT related activities. Women employees get involved in the process of developing and managing national information platforms/systems, these being complex and strategically important projects. The value women bring in the decision-making process is represented by the professionalism, dedication, responsibility and quality.
The 21st edition of the ITU Conference addresses for the first time sensitive topics regarding the gender policies in the field of ICT, underlining the need to achieve some common objectives such as:
promoting gender equality,
empowering women in telecommunications;
strengthening women's capacities to engage meaningfully in ITU’s activities;
promoting the global network of women;
building an inclusive society;
bridging the digital gender gap to highlight the importance of promoting women's leadership in ICT as well as in the activity of ITU.
The 2022 Plenipotentiary Conference of the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) is organized by the National Authority for Management and Regulation in Communications (ANCOM) in Romania, an institution that promotes the interests of service users by promoting competition and innovation in the electronic communications and postal services markets, encouraging efficient investments in networks and infrastructures and promoting ultra-fast connectivity.
